Camera movement isn’t terribly difficult to understand, but it is the area where most people tend to falter. Getting smooth, graceful shots takes time, patience, and above all, practice. Getting started learning these moves is where it all begins. Here are the basics.

Let’s forget about the camera actually moving through space for a moment. All it can really do is tilt up, tilt down, pan left, and pan right.

Now the spatial movement. The camera can move forward, backward, left, and right. It can also crane up and crane down.
Between these ten movements, you can see the fundamental mechanics of all camera movement. By combining two or more of these movements, you will see creative shots that are extremely interesting to see.

The last element to camera movement is time. You can alter how the camera moves by speeding it up or slowing it down, but we’ll talk about that another time.
